Description:   Portable analytical instruments that use energy dispersive x-ray fluorescence spectrometry or infra-red technologies have become increasingly widespread. This workshop will focus on both analytical methods and will offer: a review of instrumentation and analytical principles , an appreciation of the effect of variables such as sampling strategies, grain size, type of materials, interferences, etc. These will be illustrated by several case studies (field and lab-based). Real instruments will be brought to the workshop and ample time will be devoted to accomplish measurements on various reference samples and unknown samples brought by participants.
